Christmas Lights

Here are some top-spots to enjoy Christmas lights in Indianapolis for 2025 — perfect for family outings, festive photos, and holiday cheer. Use these as a guide to plan a fun evening of holiday displays and winter magic across the city.

Circle of Lights® – Downtown Indianapolis

One of Indy’s most iconic holiday traditions: the Monument Circle tree lighting kicks off the season for 2025 on November 28.  After the lighting, the giant tree and surrounding lights stay up through early January, turning downtown Indianapolis into a shimmering city-scape.

Why go: Free and festive, easily accessible, great for families and photo ops in the heart of the city.

Winterlights at Newfields – The Garden at Newfields

This immersive walking display features over one-million lights, dancing among trees and along paths in a beautifully decorated garden setting. The 2025-26 schedule is confirmed; tickets and advanced planning are recommended.

Tip: Dress warmly, arrive early for parking, and allow 60–90 minutes to fully enjoy the display.

Christmas Nights of Lights – Drive-Through at the Indiana State Fairgrounds

For a more relaxed experience (especially with young kids or in colder weather), this drive-through event is ideal. The display runs from November 7 – December 31, 2025, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Lights are synchronized to music via your car’s radio—perfect for cozy enjoyment from inside your vehicle.

Pro tip: Book your ticket in advance and choose an early time slot to avoid long waits.

Christmas at the Zoo – Indianapolis Zoo

A family favorite — stroll through the zoo after dark as it lights up for the season. The event runs from November 22, 2025 – January 4, 2026, Sunday through Thursday 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday, 5 to 10 p.m. Aside from lights, you’ll encounter animal exhibits, Santa visits and other festive touches—great for kids and families.

Suggestion: Visit on a weeknight for fewer crowds.

Free Commercial and Residential Displays

  • Downtown Zionsville’s parade begins at 5 p.m. and ends with Mr. and Mrs. Claus lighting the Christmas tree.  With its cobbled streets, Zionsville speaks to the child in everyone’s heart.
  • Meridian Street between 86th and 38th street. The mansions on this main north-south road never disappoint.  Grab a hot chocolate to go and enjoy the windshield view.
  • Neighborhood strolls around the Nickel Plate District in Fishers were mentioned as free holiday light walking options.

Why it works: No ticket required, informal and flexible (go when you like), and great for a relaxed family outing.
Tip: Drive slowly or walk through a well-lit neighborhood after dark. Always be mindful of safety (lighting, sidewalks, traffic) and respect private property.

Getting the Most Out of Your Festive Excursion

  • Arrive early to beat traffic and parking congestion (especially downtown and at popular venues).
  • Dress in layers—evenings can get chilly in November/December in Indianapolis.
  • Bring a camera or phone for night-mode photos; the light displays make for great memories.
  • Consider special nights or ticketed time slots for fewer crowds and added amenities.
  • Combine a lights outing with dinner or hot cocoa nearby to make a full evening of it.

With these stellar options, your 2025 holiday season in Indianapolis is set to sparkle. Whether you prefer walking through a garden of lights, driving through a tunnel of color, or enjoying downtown’s classic tree-lighting tradition, there’s something for everyone in the family.
